Former CGA Amateur champ Jertson easily advances to final round at national PGA Professional Championship; Coloradans miss 36-hole cut

(Updated April 30) Former Colorado School of Mines golfer Marty Jertson sits in 31st place out of 312 players with one round left in the national PGA Professional Championship in Bluffton, S.C.
But he’s the only person with significant Colorado ties competing on Tuesday and Wednesday after the field was cut to the top 90 players and ties after Monday’s round, and to the top 70 and ties after Tuesday.
In a year in which the Colorado PGA sent female qualifiers to the national PPC for the first time — Sherry Andonian-Smith of Centennial and Alexandra Braga of Denver — they and the other six fellow Section members fell short of the 36-hole cut line that fell at 5-over-par 148.
Two Colorado players missed the mark by two strokes, with Doug Rohrbaugh of Carbondale and Caine Fitzgerald of Parker checking in at 150.
Meanwhile, Jertson, the 2001 CGA Amateur champion, shot a 3-over-par 75 on Monday and a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to check in at 3-over 218, leaving him 10 strokes behind co-leaders Danny Balin and Alex Beach.
Jertson is looking for his fourth top-10 finish in this event. And if he ends up in the top 20 after Wednesday’s final round, he’ll earn a spot in the PGA Championship — set for May 16-19 at Bethpage Black in New York — for the fourth time.
