Local contingent in good position to make match play at U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur
By Gary Baines – 08/24/2019
If the stroke-play portion of the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur had concluded after Saturday, five out of the eight players in the field with strong Colorado connections would have advanced to match play.
Alas, there is still one more round of stroke play to go in Cedar Rapids, Iowa before the match-play bracket is set.
But suffice it to say that a fair number of local players are in good shape following Saturday’s opening round.
With the top 64 golfers after Sunday’s second round making match play, inside the cut line as of Saturday night are Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kim Eaton (5-over-par 77, tied for 25th place), part-time Gunnison resident Marilyn Hardy (77, 25th place), Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Janet Moore (78, 34th place), Stacey Arnold of Westminster (78, 34th place) and yet another Hall of Famer, Christie Austin of Denver (81, 55th place).
Eaton (pictured), a four-time quarterfinalist in this event, made a birdie, four bogeys and a double bogey on Saturday. Hardy carded three birdies and eight bogeys and didn’t make a single par on her final nine holes.
Sherry Wright of Oxnard, Calif., fired a 3-under-par 69 to grab the lead after round 1 of stroke play.
Here are the scores for all the players with strong Colorado connections:
25. Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kim Eaton 77
25. Part-time Gunnison resident Marilyn Hardy 77
34. Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Janet Moore of Centennial 78
34. Stacey Arnold of Westminster 78
55. Christie Austin of Denver 81
65. Tiffany Maurycy of Denver 82
65. Kristine Franklin of Broomfield 82
82. Part-time Castle Pines resident Kathy West 83
