Sam Marley of South Suburban Golf Course, the former University of Northern Colorado golfer who won the CGA Four-Ball title in 2015, finds himself back atop the leaderboard at the event at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster.
Jake Staiano of Glenmoor Country Club, the Colorado State University golfer who won the 2017 CGA Les Fowler Player of the Year award, and Marley fired a bogey-free best-ball 9-under-par 63 to go up by one after Friday’s opening round of the 54-hole event.
Staiano, who is set to play in his third NCAA Regional tournament later this month, has placed third in the last two CGA Four-Balls, each time with different partners.
Staiano and Marley won the Colorado Junior Match Play in back-to-back years (2013 and ’14, respectively). On Friday, they made nine best-ball birdies, with Staiano acounting for seven of them.
Former professional Charlie Soule of CommonGround and Billy Post of Meridian Golf Club hold second place at 64, with Soule firing a 66 on his own ball. Soule, like Staiano, is a former low amateur at the CoBank Colorado Open.
Nick Nosewicz of Meadow Hills Golf Course, winner of the 2015 CGA Match Play, and partner Andrew Maier of Green Valley Ranch Golf Club shot a 65, good for third place. Nosewicz posted an eight-birdie 67 on his own ball.
Jon Lindstrom and Richard Bradsby, both of Lakewood Country Club, are seeking their third consecutive CGA Four-Ball title. They opened with a 67 on Friday and share sixth place.
The championship will continue through Sunday.
