For the second time in the last year, Applewood Golf Course in Golden has earned an honor from the National Golf Course Owners Association.
In January, the NGCOA named Applewood its West Region Course of the Year and one of four finalists for the nationwide honor, which went to The Heather at Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs, Mich.
Then on Tuesday, the NGCOA announced its latest award winners. This time around, Applewood, which has operated as a public course for more than a half-century, earned the Player Development Award. (Applewood is pictured above in an applewoodgc.com photo.) According to the NGCOA, the award is “bestowed upon a course, entity or individual which has implemented true and tested player development programs, providing effective return-on-investment and an overall welcoming atmosphere for new golfers of all ages.”
Specifically, the honor went to Applewood Golf Course’s Golf Fore Life Learning Center. Also receiving the award are Youth on Course, a program founded in Northern California that is taking root in Colorado, among many other places, and Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.
All the NGCOA’s most recent honorees, including 2020 National Course of the Year Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood, Ind., will be recognized on Jan. 22 in Orlando, Fla.
