Coloradan Michael Schoolcraft lands sponsor’s exemption for TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes

By Gary Baines – 06/18/2019

The TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes added another local to its field this week when the Web.com Tour event in Berthoud announced that Englewood resident Michael Schoolcraft has been awarded a sponsor’s exemption.

The inaugural TPC Colorado Championship is set for July 11-14 at TPC Colorado.

In his pro career, Schoolcraft has competed in two PGA Tour events and three Web.com tournaments, but none at those levels since 2017. Over the last five years, the Denver native has played in 36 PGA Tour Canada events, posting four top-10 finishes, including one runner-up.

Earlier this month, Schoolcraft (pictured) competed in the U.S. Open Sectionals, the second and final stage of qualifying for the U.S. Open, falling four strokes shy of a playoff in the 36-hole event.

Other local players who are in the field for the TPC Colorado Championship are 2001 British Open champion David Duval, a Cherry Hills Village resident, and Denver native Mark Hubbard, a Web regular who will return to the PGA Tour beginning in the fall.

Speaking of upcoming Web.com Tour events, three players with strong Colorado connections qualified on Monday for this week’s Wichita Open, which starts on Thursday. Among the dozen golfers who successfully Monday qualified were former Fort Collins resident and Air Force Academy golfer Tom Whitney (9-under-par 63), the leading money winner on PGA Tour Latinoamerica this year; former Colorado State University golfer Blake Cannon (64); and former University of Colorado golfer Kevin Kring (67).
