DU’s Weinstein notches top-3 finish in her first large-scale college tourney of 2020

Three-time CGA Women’s Player of the Year Mary Weinstein is winding down her college golf career, with three months — give or take — left for the University of Denver senior.
But if this week is any indication, Weinstein won’t go out without making some noise.
The Highlands Ranch resident, who swept the CGA Women’s Stroke Play and Match Play titles in 2020 before her longtime instructor Terry Stearman passed away in December, completed her first multi-day tournament of the “spring” schedule on Tuesday by tying for third out of 84 players at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans.
Weinstein shot a 1-under-par 72 on Tuesday, leaving her with a 54-hole total of 5-under 214. After sharing the lead about halfway through her final round, she ended up two strokes behind Clara Manzalini of Florida and Anna Backman of Miami. Weinstein carded 13 birdies for the three-round event.
It was Weinstein’s third top-10 individual finish of the season, and her best showing in a large-field tournament in the 2019-20 campaign.
In the team competition, DU placed fourth out of 15 schools, while Colorado State was 14th. The Pioneers checked in at 1-over-par 877, 24 shots behind winner Florida. CSU posted a 917 total.
Elsewhere in local NCAA Division I golf, the University of Colorado women moved up three spots and finished sixth out of an 11-team field at the Rebel Beach Intercollegiate in Las Vegas. The Buffs (889) ended up 50 strokes behind winner — and third-ranked nationally — Southern California. Alisha Lau led CU individually with a 16th-place showing.
