Gunner Wiebe, the Kent Denver graduate who went on to earn the CGA Les Fowler Player of the Year award in 2010, won the National Car Rental Southern California Assistant PGA Professional Championship last week in Glendora.
Wiebe, an assistant professional at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, posted a two-day total of 3-under-par total of 141 after rounds of 71-70 at Glendora Country Club.
Wiebe, son of five-time PGA Tour Champions winner Mark Wiebe, made a dozen birdies over the two rounds and prevailed by one stroke. The victory was worth $1,600.
“The course played really tough in the afternoon when the wind got up,” Wiebe said on the Southern California PGA website. “I kind of had to reset a little, and then just grinded all day.”
Wiebe (pictured in a Southern California PGA photo) was one of four players who will advance to the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship, set for Nov. 14-17 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
